Jean-Michel Basquiat nacque a Brooklyn, borough di New York, il 22 Dicembre del 1960 da padre haitiano originario di Port-au-Prince, il contabile Gérard Basquiat, e da madre statunitense di origini portoricane, Matilde Andrades; aveva due sorelle minori: Lisane e Jeanine.

La famiglia vive a Park Slope. Basquiat inizia a manifestare interesse per il disegno fin da quattro anni, ispirato dai cartoni animati televisivi. Un amore per l'arte trasmessogli dalla madre, la quale lo accompagna spesso al Brooklyn Museum, al Metropolitan Museum ed al Museum of Modern Art di New York.

Nel 1968 viene investito da un'autovettura e gravi lesioni interne obbligano i medici all'asportazione della milza. Durante il mese di degenza al King's County, la madre gli regala il testo di anatomia Gray's Anatomy di Henry Gray, che lo influenzerà molto: nelle sue opere riporterà poi molti elementi anatomici.

Gray si chiamerà anche il gruppo musicale che Basquiat fonderà insieme agli amici Vincent Gallo, Michael Holman, Wayne Clifford, Nick Taylor e Shannon Dowson. Già all'età di 11 anni era capace di parlare, leggere e scrivere in francese e spagnolo.

Fu autore di quasi novecento Dipinti e di più di mille Disegni, senza contare i numerosi schizzi non portati a termine e i tanti appunti destinati probabilmente all'imitazione di disegni artistici di provenienza giapponese.

Tanto geniale quanto incompreso se non addirittura disprezzato in vita,

Van Gogh influenzò profondamente l'Arte del XX Secolo; dopo aver trascorso molti anni soffrendo di frequenti disturbi mentali, morì all'età di soli trentasette anni.

Iniziò a disegnare da bambino nonostante le continue pressioni del padre, pastore protestante che continuò ad impartirgli delle norme severe; continuò comunque a disegnare finché non decise di diventare un pittore vero e proprio. Iniziò a dipingere tardi, all'età di ventisette anni, realizzando molte delle sue opere più note nel corso degli ultimi due anni di vita. I suoi soggetti consistevano in autoritratti, paesaggi, nature morte di fiori, dipinti con cipressi, rappresentazione di campi di grano e girasoli.

La sua formazione si deve all'esempio del realismo paesaggistico dei pittori di Barbizon e del messaggio etico e sociale di Jean-François Millet.

GIUSEPPE PELIZZA DA VOLPEDO

 Giuseppe Pellizza, nasce il 28 Luglio 1868, muore il 14 Giugno 1907.

Pittore italiano, dapprima divisionista, poi esponente della corrente sociale, autore del celeberrimo Il quarto stato, divenuto un simbolo del mondo del lavoro subordinato e delle battaglie politico-sindacali e operaie (questione operaia), a partire dall'800 in poi con la seconda rivoluzione industriale.
